My experience with wildlife began after Max, my shepherd/lab mix, caught a bird. When I took it to a willdife sanctuary for rehabilitation I learned of volunteer opportunities that would allow me to learn to care for orphaned and injured wildlife. After volunteering for several years I was offered a staff position. I cared for injured/orphaned wildlife, learning the best ways to handle, feed and medicate them. I developed a greater appreciation of the need to let them remain wild and not turn them into human companions. Many domestic animals are available to provide companionship for people who can offer them good homes and now I focus on providing care for them when "their people" cannot.
Companion animals have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I have cared for dogs, cats, hamsters, birds and rabbits. My experience includes daily walks, feeding, cleaning, and providing medications for such ailments as lupus and Addison's disease. There have been emergency vet visits and regular check-ups. Games of fetch, demands for cookies and room under the covers has also required my attention! The same care I provide for my companion animals, members of my family, is the kind I offer your animals while you are away, whether it be for a day or a week or longer.
